  • REFERENCE CHECKS POLICY


    Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, Inc. is committed to selecting and retaining the best staff and volunteers to serve our youth. As part of the initial selection process, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, Inc. will conduct reference checks in compliance with Boys & Girls Clubs of America protocols, on any volunteer who will have face to face interaction with club members.


    All reference check findings will be considered when accepting volunteers. It is the policy of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, Inc. that a volunteer will be automatically be ineligible for volunteer service if such individual:

    A) Refuses to consent to reference checks; or
    B) Is found to have given false information during the application process.

    If after a candidate is hired or appointed to a voluntary position there is any discovery of false information on the application, the employee or volunteer will be subject to immediate dismissal.

    All information collected during a reference check will be kept confidential.

    The safety of our children is a top priority.  Anyone engaged in face to face interactions with Club members will be required to submit, on an initial and yearly basis, to a back ground check that includes: 

    1) Felony (including misdemeanor or other)

    2) Social Security Verification

    3) National Sex Offender Registry

    4) National Criminal Files

    First Advantage is the BGCA prefered vendor.  Once a volunteer has been approved by Club Directors, an application will be initiated.  The volunteer will receive an email from First Advantage, requesting the necissary and confidential information needed to conduct the screening.  The results of the screening will be sent to BGCL Human Resources.  At all times, the results of these screens are confidential and sensitive information is retained by First Advantage and not at the BGCL level.
